CRESCENT CITY, Del Norte County — Battery Point Lighthouse is a coastal landmark that requires a little more planning than most museums: visitors can only approach the tidal island when conditions allow.
The City of Crescent City identifies the lighthouse at 235 Lighthouse Way and says its original oil lamps were lit on December 10, 1856. The city describes it as an active lighthouse and a historic museum operated with volunteer keepers.
Why posted hours are not enough
The Del Norte County Historical Society lists nominal visitor hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., but emphasizes that all tours are tide permitting. Access to the island is possible only during low tide. An advertised daytime opening window does not guarantee that the crossing will be accessible throughout those hours.
Visitors should consult local tide information, verify the day’s tour arrangements and follow all posted warnings. Do not attempt to cross when rising water or surf makes passage unsafe. If conditions are unsuitable, consider viewing the lighthouse from public waterfront viewpoints instead.
Where to ask questions
The historical society lists 707-464-3922 for visitor questions. The city’s parks directory also identifies nearby waterfront observation areas, which can be useful for photography without crossing to the island.
